Course Objectives
This course is designed to provide Equine Practitioners with the necessary knowledge to properly diagnose oral pathology and balance the typical equine mouth using hand and motorized instruments. The course will consist of one day of classroom lectures and working with cadavers, followed by two days of practical small group sessions working with cadavers and live horses. These sessions will feature four students per instructor, providing excellent opportunities for individual instruction.

Day 1:
Class Lectures with Cadavers (6 Hours)
• Dental & oral anatomy
• Oral Exam & charting
• Functional odontoplasty
• Occlusal adjustment
• Obtaining diagnostic films
• Radiography
• Occlusal adjustment
• Anatomy of the head
• Endoscopy of the nasal compartments
Day 2:
Wet Lab with Cadavers and Live Horses (8 Hours)
• Understanding regional anesthesia
• Difference between periodontal and endodontic disease
• Basic extraction techniques (straight forward cheek teeth, incisors/canines)
• Floating and occlusal adjustment
• Radiography
Day 3:
Wet Lab with Cadavers and Live Horses (8 Hours)
• Equine nasal discharge
• Floating and occlusal adjustment
• Radiography
• Basic extraction techniques (straight forward cheek teeth, incisors/canines)
Continuing Education
Each course has been approved for 21 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB's RACE approval; however, participants should be aware that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions on certain methods of delivery of continuing education.
Advanced Modules
Taking the Advanced Oral Techniques for the Horse course will allow you entry to two Advanced Modules that will be offered the following Spring.
